Underground Storage Tank (UST) Services

Use of underground storage tanks (USTs) for petroleum storage began in the early 1900’s and has spread with the rise of the automobile. Regulation of USTs by the US EPA began in 1988 resulting in increased scrutiny of these systems. Environmental Engineers, Inc. personnel have the experience necessary to help our clients comply with UST regulations, whether the USTs are currently in use or were taken out of service prior to regulation by the US EPA. We can also help in those cases where the USTs were taken out of service prior to regulation by the US EPA, or were otherwise unregistered.

UST Closure Assessment—Regulations require a UST Closure Site Assessment when USTs are taken out of service. In general, this assessment includes removal of the USTs or filling the USTs with an inert material, collection of samples for analysis, disposal of petroleum impacted material, and preparation of a closure assessment report for submittal to the appropriate regulatory agency. Environmental Engineers, Inc. can provide either “turnkey” UST closure services or work as a component of a team to complete the required task(s).

Preliminary and Secondary Investigations—In the event that petroleum contamination is encountered, the regulatory agency may require additional investigation of soil and/or groundwater. These investigations typically consist of installing groundwater monitoring wells at the site to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination. Environmental Engineers, Inc. personnel have many years of experience with these investigations.

Risk-Based Corrective Action—If the results of the UST investigations indicate that petroleum contamination exists at a site at levels exceeding regulatory limits, the site may be a candidate for Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA). The RBCA includes an evaluation of the use and projected use of the site and surrounding properties, an inventory of water supply wells within the vicinity of the site, and an evaluation of the presence of sensitive receptors within the area of the site. This information is then used to assess the risk that the presence of the contamination poses to human health and the environment.

Corrective Action/Remediation—In some instances the presence of petroleum contamination in soil or groundwater may exceed the limits determined to be acceptable through RBCA. In these cases, such as the presence of free product on the groundwater surface or the presence of a drinking water supply well in the immediate vicinity of the site, it may be necessary to physically remove the contaminants from the soil or groundwater. Environmental Engineers, Inc. employs the most efficient, cost-effective remediation methods on each site.
